You contemplate, then realize it
Makes you laugh then grimace, maybe sigh
The idea that what truly matters most in Life
Is what you honestly think of yourself ... and why

the contemplation and realization of it
leaves one with a grimace and a sigh
for the only thing that really matters in life
is who you wake up holding and why

no one would believe
or care to hear
of all that i have done

unimagined
will remain
the distance i have run

as I reflect
a pride and sorrow
descends upon my soul

as I am made
to recognize
that I am less than whole

though i may be
unrealized
as tragic as can be

for these eyes
and all that i did see

Expectations and Assumptions

Beware of the lazy and the stupid
The enablers of the greedy and the smart
Though they may seem diametrically different
In effect they are not far apart

Be prepared for the perils of failure
As well as for those of success
Refrain from the use of sledgehammers
When the situation calls for finesse

Strive for incrementalism pragmatic
Be ready for shifts of tectonic plates
Progress is rarely consistent
History is full of such dates

Be aware of the world that surrounds you
Expectations and Assumptions can kill
The most important things are those closest to you
Success is a Triumph of the Will

Remember Hatred and Love are subjective
Passion and Indifference are shades
Seek moderation in these things
To avoid their double-edged blades

Find proportion between you and all others
But always to your own self be true
Understand life's own divine Providence
And good things will happen to you.

In the Moment

To constantly "live in the moment"
Is a shallow and common mistake
If allowed to become a habit
'Tis one that is difficult to break

To only look back is it's equal
To "live in the past" is denial
Tho history is known to repeat itself
It often can take quite a while

To plan for the future is wise
To bank on it, is terribly wrong
For much of life is unanticipated
Dreams dashed, a lamentable song

For success the answer's quite obvious
With experience it is easy to see
To live a life to it's fullest
One has to balance all three

The future, the past, and the present
To each, give their proper due
For when they are truly in balance
Wisdom will come shining through
